Pit

Phasing

The pit was cut by ditch 012AD08171 in the north. The pit fill contained only one sherd of later Roman pot (a Knapton type jar with a grooved rim). The only other objects were of stone, one of which was decorated with incised lines.

Discussion

This was the earliest event in the immediate area, being cut by ditch 012AD08171 in the north. It contained two fills, the uppermost containing all of the recovered material. The primary fill was a mixed natural sand in a sandy loam matrix with occasional iron panning, the excavator noticing a slighly green tinge, although the Munsell was generally 10YR 3/3, slightly darker than the latest fill, a medium sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3).

A particularly notable find was a broken fragment of decorated chalk. The decoration was of incised straight lines radiating outwards from the centre towards a slightly curved outside edge, with perhaps about 25% of the original stone remaining. The pit was cut into sand and gravel, with a flat-based U profile.

The post hole 012AD08210 has been included with this entry due to its proximity to the pit, although it may have had no functional relationship with this pit. There were no other post holes in the immediate vicinity. It was filled with a medium loamy sand (Munsell colour 10YR 4/4), with very few chalk inclusions. It was sealed by spit 012AD08187, and was cut into sand and gravel, with a U-shaped profile. No startigraphic relationship with pit 012AD08519 was established.
